Masters Study, Pierre August Cot

Masters study attempt, Springtime by Pierre August Cot in 1873. Quite possibly my favourite painting, for its beauty, warm lighting and emotion. I wish I could capture the love in the girls eyes, instead, she looks dead and bland. Its just a cropped version, the full is far too stunning for me to attempt yet. If I was Pierre, I would have been happy to die after painting this.

Morning!

30 Minutes
This morning I felt a speed paint was in order after I had showered, so I looked through my photo reference database (now up to 3GB and going for 4!) and decided to pick a nice simple animal. Dont think its too bad, but a painting is what I really need to do more of right now, along with everything else.

Work in progress, High to Low bake'd from Zbrush using Xnormals. Unfinished bump map and AO map.

Al Capone Wip 1.9K
A work in progress of a bust I've started of Al Capone. Tried brushing norms with a xnormals bake and ambient occlusion. Its 1,900 tris, didnt optimise it. Problems with zburshing normals is there are always seams, and theyve very noticable. Still I have a method of hiding them, so I will try that later.
Got the idea of modeling Mug shots from police records, because if its one thing the police do right, its decent reference photography.

Who really needs decent lighting, when you have crappy glasses?

Back in Leicester

45 mins
Back in Leicester, moving into my new place took a good 4-5 days out of my work routine, I should have known it would, but oh well. I also blame playing Alpha Centauri, man that games addictive, yet very cool, I consider it the best of the civilisation games.

Well, this is my first still life in my new accommodation, its a little car I pinched from home, I quite like the design of it, which is why I took it. I need to become less rusty.

Character Progress
A fancier render than last time, threw her into Marmoset. Today I started to play around with specular and bump mapping. However I still haven't finished the Diffuse completely, I think I will try to go for a chipped paint effect on the red areas. As you can see, I still have not properly rendered out the diffuse for her ear yet. Im happy with where this is headed though. I do not remember what number character Im on since I started making characters, probably somewhere around about 7? I should also look into proper rigging. Also, try to catch up Saran, only a couple weeks to go! Oh nooo! I wonder what the next character will be.

Also going back to Leicester soon, I just hope there isn't any difficulty moving in. Bla bla bla!

Glass bastard
That glass thing got boring quick.

Hogarth metal?
Followed up my sketch of the MtG thing, realised my soldiers looked allot like Hogarth figures. Hur, I haven't studied his work in about a year! Should really do it again he has got some amazing theory, his anatomy off though, but who cares, right? Anyway, the figures looked too cool to draw armour on top of, a bit of a shame really.

Crappy render
Glass whale
MtG Thumbs
Well Im onto texturing now, just need to fix out all of the colours, theyre looking a bit weird. Getting the hair right seems like a big challenge, but I have 1K tri to play with. Found a good way of unwrapping the hands so seams are minimal. Still no bump map as of yet.

Glass Snail

I did 3D in the morning today, instead of in the afternoon. Its quite nice achualy, I think Ill swap around my work plan you know. I will post the model when its blocked out in colour, coming along now! Anyway, continuing the glass paintings. The glass snail was pretty interesting, whats strange is its an overcast day, so the lighting wasnt super cool, if there was some light going through it, it'd look really nice and amber. But than again, you need to know how things look in poor lighting. Guess it looks a little likea jelly candy, doesnt it?

MtG Illustration of the week at Conceptart? OH HELL YEAH!

Speed paint
I got given a tone of glass objects to paint, so I gues I can enjoy that for a couple of days.

Enviro speedy

Waterfall Cottage

Some character WIPs now, those fingers are looking a little chubby, theyre going to have metal gloves on, so i think ill bulk out the thumb so it doesnt look wierd.

Bird head

2 hours maybe?
Had a look at some awful japanese street fasion website yesterday, some were interesting but other were just stupid. I did like how the full bodied shots were taken though. How the VP was usualy about sholder hight, pretty fancy.
Finished a walk cycle of my sprites, managed to get a little bob going aswell. Would look better a little more sped up maybe, i think theres a part of the hand that throws it off a bit. Hmm.

Characterss

Junk durrr

Maybe I should start doing a charcter a day, could be a good investment. Do a bunch of small drawings than have a day of drawing a more highly polished one. I dont know.

I should probably be more selective of what i post online. Oh well.

screenshot

Screenshot trying to explain one of my recent drawing methods. Works kind of well when doing large scale things, but you need to work delicately, but loose? If you get what I mean, More controle in a tighter space. Like a, surgen, or a cat.

Doop

40 minutes
Just a quick speedpaint today, practicing etting everything in perspective.I think it's a good idea to try and implement parts of perspective in all darwings, ofcorse nature doesnt have very much perspective, it has distance fade which makes you see distance. Overall yeah, quite a dull picture.

Shack

A nicer render of that shack I did a while back.
Also this is my first sprite since i was, what, 13-14? Ignore the nakedness, this is just a base, the heads are detachable and so forth. Going to make a full sprite sheet with changeable heads and what not, I just need the correct limitations for this to go ahead. Also these dont take very long to make. Its strange.
