Portraits 2023 - progression from sketch to paint
Using different mediums and surfaces is pretty interesting. The linin canvases I've been trying out seem to have a different feel while painting from the canvas boards. The paint seems to sit nicer and smooth out nicely. Considering the paint is just sitting on lots of gesso, the material under it shouldn't matter all that much. The linen isn't as tight as the board though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Karakasa card by BrushDip on Sketchfab
The Karakasa card, from Ragnarok Online. It was fun, I may try to remake more cards like this.
Back to the black and white.

Portraits and life drawing
I've been attending some portraiture sessions recently. Sittings are about 3 hours, so I've been trying to focus on getting better with oil painting and focusing on tones. So I've been working in greyscale with titanium white and ivory black, which lets me focus more on tone and not get distracted by colour so much. My thought is to get my tones and my manipulation of oil right, before jumping into a full pallet. Ill probably use a limited pallet next portrait session, and see how that goes.

Oil. 8"x10" panel. Three hours.
I tape off the sides, mostly so I dont get paint over myself walking home as I dont have one of those panel carriers. But it also looks quite nice to have clean edges.Charcoal. A3. One hour, thirty minutes.
Gouache. A4. One hour, thirty minutes.
Ink. A3. Thirty minutes.
Some older gouache life drawing from this year. I have quite a lot of old drawings from the past 3-4 years, but I dont think they'll ever see the light of day. I should keep things current, instead of looking to far in the past.Gouache. A4. Twenty seven? minutes.

Ak! Over slept today, instead of 9 hours drawing, I get 6, lame! I look quite smug in this painting, hu?
And another photo study, I was only interested in the armor and the face, didnt care too much for backgrounds this time.
Also some more work in progress for my MMO chaeracter project. Just need to render them out and theyll be fine.I also added my current idea map, Ill add comments later on, but keeping a PDF of photos I collected seems like a good way to keep my ideas together. Today is a bit of a shambles, so im going to just out some drawing time and go right into 3D. (edit) Think it was worth it, got most of the Cohan statue down, just need to go in and lower the poly count and fix up areas. Going to have to rig this to get it in the right stance, ah, it will be worth it.
