Twenty one years ago I drew a character for fun. In 2008 I drew it again to the same aspect ratio as the original to try and see how much I had improved, so I thought I'd try it again after finding the original. Trying to keep myself to the same time limit as the original, which was about 45 minutes.
It's interesting to see what I focused on in each.
2005 was for fun. 2008 was focused on high contrast lighting and detailing (I think this was when I wanted to be a concept artist.). And 2026 was focused on simplifying and making it readable with time constraints. I had tried keeping the same colours from the original, with no lights or darks, but it looked boring and flat.
If there was a 2016 version, I have a feeling it would look quite similar to 2008, just with different effects.
I think the one thing to take away from this exercise is that 45 minutes isnt much time at all, maybe it seemed like longer two decades ago. I also wonder if, in 2008 I would have considered my artwork today to be a display of 20 years of improvement. I'd probably ask what I was doing all the time.
There was a time when I drew and painted every day, but now its mostly sketching and painting from life in traditional mediums. Looking back on old artwork and thinking of previous desires, wondering what was planned in my future gives me a sense of melancholy that I dont think I can really escape from.
