Swashbuckling Cornwall Life drawings - Pirate and Gladiator themed

This is a selection of life drawings from a few clothed figure drawing sessions, hosted by Swashbuckling Cornwall. Poses usually last between 1 and 15 minutes. The short time really forces you to simplify all the detail down or pick individual things to focus on.
The themes from these are, pirates and gladiators. Most are done with pen or pencil, B to 5B, but they always feel too light.

Paintings

Heres a selection of paintings from this year.

Tree studies at a local park

I don't recommend painting on both sides of a sketchbook page, but I do it when I begin to run out of pages.

Oil portrait, 3hrs

I tried painting this onto a heavily gesso-ed panel. It makes an interesting paint brush effect.

Florida Paintings

I took a trip to Florida to visit my wife's side of the family, I tried to get a decent amount of sketching in.
White chalk horses. I took a quick photo on my phone as we past it on the train

Portraits 2023 - progression from sketch to paint

The portrait sessions I join have small breaks every 30 minutes, this is usually a good chance to take a photo of my process. I wanted to see where and when I may go wrong during a painting. The initial under drawing is the stage I need to record the most, which isn't recorded at all, as I usually finish the drawing at the first 30 minute mark.

Using different mediums and surfaces is pretty interesting. The linin canvases I've been trying out seem to have a different feel while painting from the canvas boards. The paint seems to sit nicer and smooth out nicely. Considering the paint is just sitting on lots of gesso, the material under it shouldn't matter all that much. The linen isn't as tight as the board though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Computer

I made a computer! I think its lacking in detail, but the over all shape seems nice. My main goal was to figure out that anaimated screen effect in Sketchfab.

Old blue box

This weeks sketchfab was a of a box, so I made the old blue box from ragnarok online.
"A mysterious blue box that seems to hold something inside, but you'll have to open it to find out."
It's weird how the sprites for that game and the item illustrations differ pretty wildly.

After swimming on fridays I like to paint in some of the local coffee shops.

The portrait from last week, done in gouache. There's something off about this but i can quite figure it out.
